At a time of social and physical distancing, during total lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the concept of distance took on a totally different meaning. With the restrictions imposed in order to prevent the spread of the virus, the practice of social distancing encouraged the use of other forms of communication. At that point there was no difference between being in the same city or the other side of the world. The psychological isolation meant reaching out to loved ones to get the social support needed, wherever they were.
The new restrictions helped rewrite the cognitive script of physical space, forcing us to “unlearn” subconscious behaviour. We were urged to re-evaluate ourselves and consciously explore our immediate surroundings. The nearest escape to nature in the radius of anybody’s house, was their own personal getaway.
